STONES OF ST LOUIS
an ecology of rocks
Four sites are selected along the St Louis Metrolink railroad corridor. Huge rocks and objects harvested from the corridor are arranged into configurations that can be seen from the train. They can also be encountered on foot. Stone alignments are sites of intersection, where geological flows meet mathematical orders. Such alignments are not static, but terrains where complex communities interact. The rocks themselves are like the keystone species in an ecosystem. They have a productive capacity. And like machines they are open to transmissions from without, pass these transmissions on, and are transformed by them in the process. Rain, and birds, lichen and insects, tourists and teenagers. Rocks are always changing even when they don't seem to be. Rocks are the most fluid of things. The St Louis Metrolink rail corridor is a place where time is measured by the slow passage of things through space.
