DYSFUNCTIONAL SYSTEMS
When something breaks away from the purpose for which it has been designed we take another look. Birds fall from the sky, and we tenderly place their bodies on the rocks that seem to have put themselves into position. Other rocks split open and we develop a sense of their fragility. Dead cats and dead birds are distributed a cross a bloody field while, elsewhere, trees break and we don’t cry. They still have their numbers. The world we share with these objects opens up a little more when they are deprived of their appointed place in it. Disruption and disturbance reveal something about our world that we take for granted. Dysfunctionality illuminates its corners. When equipment is misaligned, mis-appropriated or re-assigned to different systems we are awoken to the rarity of the world.
